The Company was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in August 1997 under the name of AGN Limited. Its origins date back some 150 years to the gas distribution networks of the former South Australian and Brisbane Gas Companies, and the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria.
The South Australian and Brisbane Gas Companies, which started operating in 1861 and 1864 respectively, were owned by Boral Limited. In early 1997, Boral decided to sell the distribution networks of these companies by floating AGN Limited as a new company, which acquired these assets for $900 million.
In March 1999, AGN acquired part of the former Gas and Fuel Corporation's distribution network in Victoria for $1.2 billion bringing the total value of the Company's assets to $2.1 billion.

In September 2014, a consortium of the three companies within the Hong Kong based Cheung Kong Group acquired all the listed shares in AGN Ltd, and in October 2014, the name of the Company was changed to Australian Gas Networks. The new name more accurately reflects the nature of the business and the national footprint over which it operates.

When two good mates get together, one the Chief Winemaker with a major winery from the Barossa Valley and with his own vineyard, the other with a passion for wine, the inevitable had to happen and Purple Hands Wines was created. Craig Stansborough and Mark Slade started Purple Hands in 2006 with a humble start, making just 100 dozen in the first vintage. Just over a tonne of hand picked Shiraz was crushed and barrel fermented in Craig’s shed and then came the hard part, to find a name for the label.
Purple Hands Wines, are situated in the Southern Barossa just north west of Williamstown, a stones throw from the Whispering Wall reservoir. The 32 acre vineyard is planted on perfect Shiraz dirt, friable red clay over limestone. The vineyard plantings include Shiraz, Montepulciano and Aglianico. The southern end of the valley is recognized as the “cooler” end of the valley, with slightly lower temperatures and longer ripening periods to develop flavours.
